From September 2020, Relationships Education and Health Education were made statutory in primary schools. Relationships and Health Education (RHE) is an important part of our school commitment to provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to keep themselves safe, make healthy choices, develop respect for themselves and others, and form positive and healthy relationships. It also fits with our school values of kindness, respect and responsibility.

Here, at Kings’ Forest, we deliver the statutory content through the Discovery Education programme. As a school, we feel this is the right programme for us because it has;

  • Been written by expert practitioners in the field;
  • Has age-appropriate content for each year group;
  • Has high quality and engaging video content;
  • Has lots of interactive learning activities;
  • Fits with our school values and ethos;
  • Covers statutory elements of the DFE RSHE guidance.

The DfE guidance states ‘The DfE continues to recommend that all primary schools should have a sex education programme tailored to the age and the physical and emotional maturity of the pupils. We plan to include the non-statutory elements of sex education in Year 6 to meet the needs of our pupils. Parents can withdraw their child from these elements provided in the Year 6 programme, but no other part of our RHE programme. The sex education lessons in the programme fall within the Year 6 Families and Committed Relationships strand.

Class teachers will teach PSHE weekly, delivering a PSHE lesson following the Discovery Education programme one week followed by a Circle Time lesson in the upcoming week. Circle Time provides a time and space where children can learn life skills such as effective communication, emotional literacy and social problem solving. It is a time when pupils can get to know one another and share experiences and feelings and feel valued. Circle Times are to be taught in line with what is being delivered in Discovery Education lessons.
